Not to take anything from the King of Pop, but for the Beer Baron the real Michael Jackson has always been the bearded Brit known as the Beer Hunter, who died last month of a heart attack at age 65.
If you, like Pax and the Baron, revere Belgian beer, you owe much to the Beer Hunter. He spent his life traveling the world, drinking beer and writing about it in a uniquely loving and ecumenical style. Perhaps more than anyone who’s not a Trappist monk, he is responsible for the now-widespread recognition that those Belgians make some crazy good beer.
He was also a key figure in the rise of craft brewing in the United States, so if you like your Dogfish or Sierra Nevada or Otter Creek, or any of the other myriad microbrews, raise a glass for the man. Without him you might not be enjoying that beer at all.
Here’s some video shot just before his death.
Rest in peace, you lovely, lovely man.

I’ll pour out some of my Colt .45 in his honor tonight…
