A few quick links to help you keep pace:

  • You know those red light cameras that take your picture as you speed through the intersection on your way to church or the adult video store? Looks like some U.S. cities have been gaming the system by shortening the yellow lights at signals with cameras — thereby endangering the citizenry in pursuit of a buck. You stay classy, Dallas. [Motorists.org]
  • For some bread-winners in developing countries, the cell phone is better protected from elements than the family home. Some say the cell phone is so important it can end global poverty. Phew. We can finally stop thinking about that. [NY Times Magazine]
  • Universal Music says it is illegal for DJs and the like to throw promotional CDs in the trash. Why? Because doing so is an “unauthorized distribution” of the music. In a landfill somewhere, a broken pile of Coolio demos wonders what went wrong. [Boing Boing]
  • Portfolio says the future of the music business is here. As long as here is South Korea, where a guy named Jin-Young Park is making money hand over fist by focusing on promoting singles over albums, ditching CDs altogether, and building tie-ins with phone cards, ringtones, and other collateral elements. I say Korean pop music is really f**king strange. [Portfolio]
  • The French Dip sandwich turns 100 this year. Alas, the soup du jour died in infancy. [LA Times]
