In case you still weren’t clear on why it is important to use and support open standards for digital music files such as MP3s, consider the shuttering of the Yahoo! Music Store fair warning. Like some other online music stores, the Yahoo! store employed DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology to limit your use of the music you just paid good money for.
Yahoo! is taking its authentication servers offline, which means customers will be prevented from authenticating their music from other devices in the future. In other words, you paid for it, but you can’t listen to it anywhere else other than your current computer. Have fun with that in five years.
This is important, because despite how big and mighty iTunes looks right now, if Apple goes down the tubes so does any music you bought there. Just buy from Amazon or eMusic instead. It’s cheaper anyway.
