Friday Random 10: Put a Cork In It Edition

Pax Arcana

Back when I was studying for a knighthood in the Ordre Universel des Chevaliers du Cep, there were only two acceptable methods for corking wine bottles. One was the familiar Quercus suber, or cork tree tissue.

corkThe other required a certain feat of physiological gymnastics that I would rather not discuss in public.

Anyway, at least one high-end Champagne producer has plans to replace traditional cork with one made of aluminum. The producer, Duval-Leroy, says the new cork will protect the bubbly better than natural cork without the gauche ramifications of using a screw cap:

But the new cork will, it is promised, still produce the familiar “pop” and spray beloved of generations of racing drivers on the winner’s podium.

I’m just glad we didn’t use this type of cork back in my racing days, because I’m pretty sure someone would have lost an eye that one time.

The songs:

Gimme Some Salt — Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Wildcat — Ratatat
Narcolepsy — Ben Folds Five
The Big Country — Talking Heads
Atlas — Battles
Frightening Lives — Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew
You Don’t Miss Your Water — Otis Redding
Deeper Into Movies — Yo La Tengo
Sugar on my Tongue — Talking Heads
Wham City — Dan Deacon

Bonus video:

Comfort Eagle and Stickshifts and Safety Belts — Cake (Live)

The Rules: The Friday Random 10 is exactly that — random. We open up our iTunes, set the thing on shuffle, and listen to 10 songs. We are not permitted to skip any out of embarrassment or fear of redundancy. Commenters are encouraged to post their own.
